Cheryl Cole at Cannes in Stephane Rolland

There can be no doubt about the talent of Stephane Rolland and the beauty of Cheryl Cole and yet the majority of Cannes Red Carpet critics are putting the boot in – why?

Do you think her choice deserves the abuse?

I mean she was hardly Elena Lenina…

Victoria Beckham’s London Store

As Victoria Beckham’s plans to unveil her first retail unit in London we consider elements for our Spring Summer 2013 collection and draw some comparisons. Not unlike Spencer, Victoria has a timeless, classic element to her clothing that I suspect will heavily influence her store concept.

I foresee lots of white walls, lots of mirrors and glass chandeliers – space upon space with attentive “Stylists” not shop assistants that require new feet every month – wearing those glorious, towering heels every day is going to be tough.

The image above and below is the space of Liana Yaroslavsky, her Atelier – Liana is based in New York and designs predominantly coffee tables, some glass boxes that are home to the odd chandelier. Great in a modern vintage twist – a bit like Spencer, a bit like Victoria.

Bebaroque – a great opportunity!

Our good friends Bebaroque are having a sample sale, they are selling one off editorial pieces, special one off samples that didn’t make it to production and a last chance to buy last seasons stock. The event will take place at 25A Thistle Street Edinburgh EH2 1DX on the Friday 1st June, and Saturday 2nd June.

Now get into the centre of Edinburgh and say hello!

If you don’t know the company – from their “About page”: The Bebaroque label was started in July 2007 by Mhairi McNicol and Chloe Patience. Both designers completed their BA(hons) in Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art in 2005 and then went off separately to gain Master degrees in Textiles and Fashion. Chloe moving on to the Edinburgh College of Art, whilst Mhairi remaining at the GSA.

Both Chloe and Mhairi separately began designing leg wear and decided to join forces, creating something very special and unique to the market. With Mhairi’s elaborate hand embroidery and Chloe’s intricate drawing skills upon hosiery, a truly innovative design process was developed.

With help along the way from agencies such as the Business Gateway, The Princes Trust and full support from the prestigious NESTA programme, bebaroque has quickly developed as a trading company selling in well known and desirable stockists all over the world.

Bebaroque products are both designed and manufactured in Scotland by Chloe and Mhairi using hand embroidery and print.

Celebrate – Strength, Independence and Allure of your Being!

Ok, so we have a very clear vision for our Spencer girl, mid 30′s, unmarried but in a relationship, lives in the city, professional job, loves to party – you’ve heard me say this all before – and clearly there’s more to her but get this: I have a friend who is developing a Lingerie brand and in helping her (from a distance) I came across Marlies Dekkers. Here’s a lingerie designer who is grabbing her world with both hands and bringing real self confidence to her supporters (Lady Gaga and Rhianna amongst them).

For us at Spencer we design clothing that gives you confidence – no really. The lining alone, slip your arm into one of our jackets and you can instantly feel empowered. Marlies is doing the same in lingerie, inner-wear as outer-wear, please excuse I can not find a complete UK translation but this 6 minute profile should give you an indication of her vision.

50′s Vintage influence V’s Tramp

It’s been noted that the current fascination for Vintage in particular 1950′s Americana is to do with the gentle turnaround in the economy; it would appear our sites are now set on high glamour, not necessarily Holywood but more specifically luxury; long sleek lines, full skirts, costume jewellery and less plain shoes.

I am very much looking forward to not witnessing micro-mini’s, boob tubes and bare midriffs. Girls that show their legs can be glamorous, girls that have plunging necklines can look stunning – together they turn heads but in my mind it says Tramp. Let’s move away from Page 3 to true glamour, let’s get some dignity and that utter belief in your female form that portrays magnetism through allure and confidence.

I never get tired of looking at Marilyn Monroe…

Freedom!

Ok, so I don’t want to provide an unwanted image in your head but today I received a book from Amazon written and illustrated by a friend of mine “Hugh MacLeod” – the title: Freedom is Blogging in your Underwear“; it’s his third, he’s the best selling author of Ignore Everybody – are you sensing a theme?

You may ask why a fashion label would promote the idea of sitting around in your underwear… but as you may have noticed by yesterdays’ post we’re huge fans of the blogging community – the real essence of the book is developing a sense of identity through finding your voice. Hopefully you may have come across one of our previous blog posts explaining our vision for Spencer – we strive to provide clothing that not only provides a strong identity but provides you the confidence to embrace it.
