Harajuku – Tokyo
You’ll remember Gwen Stefani singing about and incorporating Harajuku girls in her music and stage shows a few years back. If you’re not familiar with the term it’s essentially a small area in Tokyo that has adopted a street style and subsequently neighbouring boutiques cater to the individuals who hang out there.
i remember reading about it in the 80’s, the dominant trend then was the 50’s, the guys in ripped denim, big quiffs and their collars up, the girls with cute summer dresses with crinoline or countless net under-skirts and big beehives. Now it’s more of a mishmash there’s no specific focus for the entire group – Manga cartoons to theatrical Goths to Fairytales.
Is it somewhere to draw inspiration? Maybe, or maybe not, but it’s still fascinating to watch them attempt to create a buzz on their way from college to Harajuku.
